Today, I’m diving into an epic suspension upgrade that’s been a long time coming—installing Bilstein 5100 shocks on the rear of my 2019 Ram 1500. These shocks have been on my radar for months. Thanks to high demand and limited supply, tracking them down turned into a bit of a quest. But I finally got my hands on a pair, and let me tell you—they’re absolutely worth the chase.

Why Bilstein 5100 Shocks?
If you’re unfamiliar, Bilstein 5100 shocks are built for trucks and SUVs that demand more than just average performance. They’re engineered for lifted applications and deliver superior control, comfort, and off-road handling. For anyone serious about their truck’s ride quality and responsiveness—especially after a leveling kit or mild lift—these shocks are a go-to choice.
I had already installed Bilstein leveling struts on the front of the truck and loved the results. So naturally, it was time to finish the job and bring the rear suspension up to the same level.

Getting Started: Removing the Old Shocks
The first step was removing the wheel well liner to gain clear access to the shock mounts. A simple set of eight-millimeter screws held it in place. While it can be a bit finicky to wiggle out, patience and a little leverage go a long way.
Next, I tackled the top nut on the old shock. Of course, it was rusted—because what suspension job doesn’t start with a little rust wrestling? A quick blast with some elbow grease (and maybe a little penetrating oil) loosened it right up. Then I removed the bottom bolt, freeing the stock shock.
Installing the New Bilstein 5100 Shocks
One of the many reasons I love Bilstein is the complete hardware kit they include with the shocks. Each unit came with new upper and lower mounts, bushings, a metal sleeve, and a top nut. The updated hardware makes installation smooth and ensures a snug, rattle-free fit.
To install, I started by sliding the lower mount into place, followed by the metal sleeve and the corresponding lower bushing. The top bushing is conical on the inside, so I made sure the wider end faced downward toward the lower bushing—this ensures they nest correctly.
Here’s where things got a little tricky. Because I had jacked the truck up by the axle, the shock was fully extended. I had to compress and decompress the shock manually to get everything aligned correctly. Lesson learned: next time I’ll support the frame to let the axle drop, which would make it easier to fit the shock without a workout.
Once I had the top and bottom mounts in place, I torqued everything to spec using a torque wrench. Always torque to manufacturer recommendations—don’t just guess or go “nice and tight.” That’s how you end up back under the truck next weekend fixing loose bolts.
Wrangling the Wheel Well Liner
Now for the part that always tests my patience—putting the wheel well liner back in. It’s awkward, stubborn, and doesn’t like to sit properly. But after a few minutes of wrangling, I got it into place and secured all the screws. Honestly, this was the hardest part of the whole install.
With one side done, I moved to the other and repeated the process off-camera. Everything bolted up smoothly, and now both sides of the rear suspension are riding on fresh Bilstein 5100 shocks.
Bilstein 5100 Shocks Are a Game Changer
Installing Bilstein 5100 shocks on the rear of my Ram 1500 has completely transformed the ride. Paired with the front Bilstein struts, the truck now feels more planted, responsive, and stable—on the road and off. Whether I’m hauling gear, towing a trailer, or just hitting the backroads, the performance improvement is noticeable and exceptional.
If you’re dealing with worn factory shocks or upgrading after a leveling kit, I can’t recommend the Bilstein 5100 shocks enough. They’re not just a replacement—they’re an enhancement. The added confidence and control they deliver are worth every bit of effort to install.
